Welcome to the Art Van Go
Sunmmer Workshop Programme
July/August 2008

main programme || information and booking

at a glance: July | August

Welcome to the Summer workshop programme. It is, of necessity, a quieter and shorter programme compared to the rest of the year. The summer continues to be one of the busiest periods for Art Van Go with Summer Schools to attend on almost a daily basis throughout August, as well as the show season getting underway This unfortunately leaves fewer days unencumbered to hold workshops. Gallery events & exhibitions are listed as usual. Make special note of the new Artists in Action feature we are sponsoring at the Knitting & Stitching Show at the NEC.

All day workshops run from 10am - 4 pm,
Individual evening workshop times are shown

Workshops take place in our Workshop Studio, which is beautifully designed and finished, with heating and air-conditioning. For further details, please see our information and booking page.

key: 1 & 2-day workshops
July
Jacky has previously presented workshops for us using FibreDK (Lutradur), but in this new departure Jacky creates a totally original surface - a technique that has been incorporated into her own exciting work. To allow for processing, the two day workshop will be split over two separate weeks.
Pasted Fabrics with Texture Stitch (part 1 of two-part workshop)
Tutor: Jacky Russell
Tues 15th July
Bags of scrap fabric and papers, threads, pieces too precious to throw away? Everybody has scrap material and these can be transformed into strong laminated 'fabrics'. By simply pasting and building up surfaces and texture, unique revamped pieces can be further embellished with textured hand or machine stitching. Several pasted 'fabrics' can be made the first week and these can be further transformed with stitch in the second week to produce cards, book covers, folders and more.
Second day: Tues 22nd July
Two day course cost: £60.00 (inc £5.00 materials charge)

We've presented workshops in the past on 'glass painting', but this is a new subject for us - an introduction to the art of 'piecing' glass. Simple designs will be used, but who knows - maybe one day you could be creating your own stained glass windows!
Foiled Stained Glass
Tutor: Jennifer Yardeni
Wed 16th July
A basic workshop in the Tiffany copper foil method of stained glass. Demonstrations and instructions will be given on how to cut glass into various shapes followed by grinding, foiling, soldering and then finishing a suncatcher. (A choice of several patterns will be provided.) The methods shown can be used in an endless range of items ie panels, suncatchers or lampshades as well as 3d projects. All materials provided.
Cost: £45.00 (inc £20.00 materials charge)

Romancing Romeo
Carol Cann is an expert in the area of machine embroidery on soluble surfaces (Romeo is the name of one of them!). Her beautiful work has been featured in highly respected galleries around the country (including various exhibitions in the Art Van Go Gallery) and is held in private collections. We are delighted that Carol has put together a series of workshops that will start with the introduction of soluble films & papers and progress through to more advanced techniques. This is not a course - the workshops can be dipped into as the subject appeals - but those of you with little or no experience of this subject would find this progressive series of workshops extremely useful and inspirational.

"Starting with basic grids and simple machine stitching we shall begin to build our confidence using soluble films/fabrics as our base. During our flirtation with Romeo we shall also be adding threads not designed for the sewing machine as well as tiny fabric snips to create our delicate fabrics. We’ll then consider motif shapes and filling them but still leaving open structures, connecting fabrics using free-machining and creating more fabrics using fabric/thread snips and creating tassels using fabrics made with water-solubles."

"Over subsequent workshops we shall build further on your technique base and look at designing lace panels, lettering in lace and creating 3D items from soluble fabrics/films. During these workshops we will also be incorporating fibres, dyeing/colouring your work and adding other media such as papers and paper pulp, foils, leafing, mica and wires."

Flirting with Romeo Workshop 1: An introduction to working with soluble surfaces
Tutor: Carol Cann
Thurs 17th July
Take your first steps in falling for Romeo and other water soluble films/fabrics. Combining basic grids, machine and other threads, fabric snips, non-free machining and some free-machining we will be making delicate open structures. Familiarity with your sewing machine is essential. While this day is for the novice in soluble film/fabrics and will give a grounding in working with cold water soluble film/fabric, those who have perhaps not used wsf for a while might like the opportunity to rediscover and remind themselves of the basics in wsf techniques. Using cold water soluble film/fabric, simple stitching and basic grid designs as our starting point we will be adding the use of fabric snips and the more unusual hand stitch threads to liven up the work as experience grows. While it is not necessary for students to be familiar with free-machining they must be familiar with their machine and have a darning foot for free-machine work.
Cost: £25.00

Flirting with Romeo Workshop 2: Moving On!
Tutor: Carol Cann
Fri 18th July
Our first steps in falling for Romeo continue with more free machining and playing with some basic motif shapes and transparent fabrics and velvets to create something with a little more body. We'll also be looking at some tassels using fabrics made using water soluble fabric/film. Familiarity with your sewing machine is essential. While this second day is also for the novice in soluble film/fabrics and continues the grounding in working with cold water soluble film/fabric, those who have perhaps not used wsf for a while might like the opportunity to rediscover and remind themselves of the basics in wsf techniques. Using cold water soluble film/fabric, more free-machining than Day 1, motif designs and fabrics ranging from transparent to velvet students will create more fabrics including those with lace inserts. While students do not need to be familiar with free machining, they must be familiar with their machine and have darning foot for free-machining.
Cost: £25.00

A new tutor to Art Van Go, Jill Winch started her career as a graphic artist but later discovered botanical art using watercolours and coloured pencils. She trained at The Chelsea Physic Garden in London, is a member of the Society of Floral Painters and now teaches as well as exhibiting her own work. Her teaching methods are extremely popular as she uses lots of demonstrations to show exactly 'how it is achieved'.
Summer Fruit
Tutor: Jill Winch
Thurs 24th July

August
We are welcoming back Isobel Hall, who lives in Spain, for this her second workshop here at Art Van Go. You will remember her wonderful book and related exhibition 'Bags with Paper & Stitch', but Isobel now takes some of her techniques into books and book covers.
Books 1-2-3! (two day workshop)
Tutor: Isobel Hall
Tues 5th Aug, Wed 6th Aug
It is envisaged that at least three will be completed and that at least one of the books will feature techniques which make paper resemble leather.
HARD BACKED BOOK WITH AN OPEN EMBROIDERED SPINE - Book blocks will be used to construct a hard backed book with an open embroidered spine. This is a decorative feature so the thread will be strong and colourful to blend with the coloured and embroidered cover.
JAPANESE STYLE BINDING - This book with paper pages will be sewn using ribbon which will add strength and be a decorative feature.
SCREW POSTS - Screw posts will be provided for this book which has hole punched pages and an embroidered cover.
Cost: £69.00 (inc £5.00 materials charge)

Free & Easy Flowers
Tutor: Suzy Drake
Fri 15th Aug
A one-off day of relaxed, enjoyable watercolour painting using wet-in-wet, loose, impressionistic techniques. The emphasis will be on the colour and vibrancy of flowers in a style that everyone can tackle as you don't need great watercolour experience or brilliant drawing skills! For near beginners or improvers.
Cost: £22.00

This workshop was so popular when we ran it in April we could have filled it at least twice over. This is a repeat of that workshop for those who are clamouring to get onto it.
The Fabric of Embellishment (Two Day Workshop)
Tutor: Pauline Verrinder
Wed 20th Aug, Thurs 21st Aug
Discover the potential of the Embellisher as another tool to contribute to the creativity of the textile artist. Two days of challenges and experimentation to prove that the purchase of your embellisher was not just about the necessity to acquire the latest gimmick on the market. This is a machine that has endless possibilities for creating unique fabrics, manipulation and infinite forms of embellishment, which become an exciting foil for stitch. It is essential that you bring an Embellisher or have a needlefelting attachment for your sewing machine.
Cost: £50.00 (inc £2.00 materials charge)

September

Ruth Issett
will be taking a

Masterclass
in the
Artists in Action Studio

at the
Knitting & Stitching Show, NEC
September 2008

See www.twistedthread.com

For the first time, at the Knitting & Stitching Show at the NEC 11th - 14th September 2008 ART VAN GO will be sponsoring the new feature at the show - Artists in Action - a space built especially to allow the public to watch and learn, as top textile artists get to work in a studio space. Different artists will work across a range of disciplines throughout the day from Friday to Sunday.

Ruth Issett will take a Masterclass in the Artists in Action Studio from Tues - Thurs.   Go to www.twistedthread.com for details. Spaces will be limited so book early!

Once the masterclass has finished the studio will be opened up to a whole rosta of different textile artists demonstrating their craft.   The artists involved are:
Jan Beaney, Claire Benn, Bobby Britnell, Rose Campbell, Sue Chapman, Ros Chilcot, Ruth Issett, Linda & Laura Kemshall, Alison King, Jean Littlejohn, Kim Major-George, Leslie Morgan, Laura Pymer.

Come along to the show and see how the work of many of these artists develops from the initial design and thought processes and progresses towards the eventual conclusion.   The artists may be working on a variety of techniques from easel-based work with large mark-making techniques; collage and printing techniques; screen and collograph printing, machining, dyeing and stitching.

We would like to thank all these artists for their support in this new feature; to thank Ruth for co-ordinating the artists' event, and Clare Benn & Leslie Morgan (Committed to Cloth) for the provision (and logistics) of the essential studio equipment.

Our co-sponsors of this event are: Jacquard Products, C. Robersons & Co, Sinotex , Markal, Khadi Papers , Fabriano Papers, Drummonds of Edinburgh, Doughty's
