Iron Rust Dyeing
Equipment
- 2 x 5 litres warm water
- 500 g ferrous sulphate
- 10 g sodium carbonate
- Container for stove-top dyeing - capacity 5 litres plus fabric
Instructions
- Fill dye container with 5 litres warm water and add ferrous sulphate.
- Stir gently to mix.
- Place fabric in dye container and, over a period of 10-15 minutes, bring to the boil.
- Simmer for 5-10 minutes. Stir to ensure even distribution of chemical. Make sure fabric remains submerged.
- Remove fabric and spread out to dry and allow oxidation to take place.
- Refill dye container with 5 litres warm water and add sodium carbonate. Stir to dissolve.
- Place fabric back in dye container and leave to soak for 10-15 minutes, until fabric changes from green to a golden rust colour.
- Rinse in cold running water and then warm water with small amount of detergent.
- Finally rinse in cold water and leave to dry.
