FAQ

Marbling

How do I use Carrageenan Moss (carragheen) to make a size for marbling?

You'll find a recipe for Carrageenan Moss and other marbling sizes on the web site of Liquitex, one of our suppliers, in their article Marbling: Applications and Techniques

Papers

I want to buy some 'bleeding' tissue as described in the article Sun Prints with Tissue Paper in Quilting Arts magazine, summer 2006?

We do not have that particular tissue - and in fact the tissue we have has changed from being 'bleeding' to non-bleed. I'm sure though that if necessary we could find a 'bleeding' tissue.
I've read the article, and one thing does worry me. Lightfastness. There is no mention of how long these colours will last. The Pebeo colour (or in our case we keep Javana as it is a stronger and brighter colour) will be pigment based, therefore heat fixed and resistant to light fading. Tissue paper is generally coloured with dye (and not fabric dye) to give it its vibrant colour and it will be this feature that makes it 'bleed'. The type of dye used is not necessarily lightfast (try putting tissue paper in a sunny window and see how quickly it fades compared to printed or dyed fabric). Tissue is considered to be shortlived (like newsprint) so there is no consideration given to how long the colour will last. If these elements are used in a piece of work you will have to consider how the tissue-type-colour will/may fade.
